Though Eddie Murphy was originally set to play Richard Pryor in Bill Condon's upcoming biopic, 'Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?', flick about the iconic comedian's life, things have changed and he is no longer apart of the project. Marlon Wayans (White Chicks, Scary Movie, G.I. Joe:Rise of the Cobra) is now in serious negotiations for the role. The role is one quite sought after by many, including fellow comedian Mike Epps who was also one of the top contenders. However the announcement of Wayans as the leading role of Pryor has caused some controversy amongst Hollywood. Various statements have been made from many implying that Wayans is incompetent for such a strong role and that his portrayal of Pryor probably won't fully capture his true greatness & struggles. Though his family name is known for comedy, Marlon has tackled some serious content before with roles in "Requiem For a Dream" and "The Ladykillers".
Legendary entertainer Richard Pryor paved the way for several current comedians and went on to win five Grammy Awards for his concert albums. He suffered from drug addiction and alcoholism, and once even set himself on fire while using cocaine. Pryor died in 2005 at the age of 65 after suffering from a heart attack and a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
The film is being produced by Chris Rock, Mark Gordon, (director) Bill Condon and Adam Sandler through Sandler's Happy Madison Productions at Sony Pictures. Pryor's fifth and final wife Jennifer Lee Pryor will also serve as a producer. Film production is set to begin this spring.
