Chris Evans is Now Captain America

Late last week, I put a moratorium on Captain America casting news until they finally named a new Steve Rogers. It was just getting so out of control. Then over the weekend, it was announced that Marvel may have offered the part to Chris Evans, who has already played a Marvel hero - The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies - but even that wasn't enough for us to write another word about it.

Now, Heat Vision Blog reveals that Evans has accepted the offer, he will star in The First Avenger: Captain America, The Avengers, and a possible total of seven additional films in one capacity or another, and that's that. Marvel and Evans have remained silent, although it's due to the fact that the contract hasn't been sealed, but the deal is done in principle.

There have been so many strange developments in the past few months with Captain America, but this is probably a very good casting decision. Evans is young enough, plays action well, has experience in this universe (and the actual Marvel Universe, if you prefer), and should be a better selection in a leading role than, say, John Krasinski, who at one point was envisioned as the new Cap.

I don't know if I love the move the way I did Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, but based on the names that came up, Evans or Garrett Hedlund had to be the top choice. I don't know why Marvel didn't want a bigger movie star - actually, I do; it's the money - but Evans is better than most of the other candidates. It's the second step in the right direction for this film in the past couple weeks, with Hugo Weaving joining the cast as the villain, The Red Skull.

Prior to that, there was a lot of stuff circulating that just didn't seem to be consistent with a film on this level. That's true to Marvel's current business model, which wants to underpay just about everybody; the studio had trouble putting Iron Man 2 together, if you'll remember.

Shooting for Captain America will begin soon and the movie will come out next summer.
