David Purcell On Getting Started with Artist Management


David Purcell from NYU talks about getting started in artist management in the music industry today. He suggests to spark up a rapport with a band you want to work with and speak with other artist managers. He talks about the importance of asking questions, observing what other bands are doing correctly and incorrectly, and isolating trends. He advises to model yourself after bands that have had moderate success and isolate a venue you believe would be appropriate for your band or artist. Mr. Purcell also says to get as many research books on artist management as you can.

Nick states that the main objective of a tour manager is to be organized and keep the band on track by completing everything on time. He also goes over different styles of being a tour manager and makes the point that a tour manager doesn't necessarily have to have a musical background.

Dan Carlin, Chair of the Film Scoring Department at Berklee and Chair Emeritus of the Recording Academy, has had a long and varied career in the business of music for film. His many credits include The Black Stallion (music editor), Sister Act (music consultant), The Last Of The Mohicans (music supervisor) and A Civil Action (conductor). In addition to his film work, Carlin served as the Executive Director of the Henry Mancini Institute, a music education and scholarship program, until it closed its doors in December 2006.
