Sony to bow 3-D TVs, games in 2010

TOKYO -- Sony has unveiled plans for 3-D-capable consumer products that will hit the shelves in 2010, boosting the burgeoning market for 3-D pics while putting competitive pressure on its rivals.

On Thursday the electronics giant said it would bow Bravia LCD televisions, PlayStation 3 game consoles, Vaio computers and Blu-ray disc players with 3-D capability. It also plans to expand its range of 3-D software.

Sony's 3-D push comes as the demand for 3-D pics is poised to accelerate in the U.S. and worldwide, with 7,000 3-D theater screens expected to be up and running worldwide by the end of the year.

Sony CEO and chairman Howard Stringer outlined Sony's 3-D plans at a press conference in Berlin on the eve of the IFA 2009 consumer electronics show, a six-day confab that begins today.
