Celebrity Chefs: Unexpected Entertainment
Emeril Lagasse. Bobby Flay. Rachael Ray. Giada de Laurentis. All of these names are synonymous with both food and celebrity. More and more as each year passes we are introduced with yet another celebrity chef. Who exactly are these people? And what makes a chef a celebrity? Well, we were really able to answer that question with the introduction of Emeril Lagasse’s groundbreaking show, Emeril Live. In that show he attempted to do what no chef had been successful at before: make cooking into entertainment. Entertainment that hundreds of thousands of viewers tuned into night after night making it one of Food Network’s most popular shows at the time of it’s launching.[1] Lagasse was well known in culinary circles, but really became a household name with the launch of Emeril Live. Using catchphrases such as “Bam!” and “Oh yeah baby” he makes cooking look fun. Soon after came shows like Alton Brown’s Good Eats, which combines cooking and science, and Iron Chef: America. It became clear very quickly what a ludicrous business this could turn into. Today, nearly all of the chefs on Food Network have their own line of cooking tools and/or are currently a spokesperson on TV. Something that originally didn’t make that much money has turned into quite the money maker. Not only for the cable networks, but for television networks as well. In 2005 Rachael Ray launched not only her magazine, but also the exceedingly popular daytime talk show Rachael Ray. The show has since won two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment and averages about 2.6 million views daily [2]. Somehow in the last five years these culinary giants have won over both our hearts and our bellies.

ABC's 'Lost' finishes on top
Series finale nabs best numbers in two years
By RICK KISSELL
According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, the 2 1/2-hour conclusion to "Lost" averaged a 5.8 rating/15 share in adults 18-49 and 13.5 million viewers overall, with its final half-hour -- which won't count in the net's averages because it aired outside of primetime -- averaging a 6.4/19 in the demo and 15.3 million viewers overall. These are the best scores for the island adventure mystery since February 2008, and reps a roughly 30% gain over its fifth-season finale a year ago. It was also up 35% from the series' penultimate episode last Tuesday.
Kicking off the night in fine fashion for the Alphabet was the two-hour retrospective "Lost: The Final Journey" (4.0/13 in 18-49, 9.8 million viewers overall), which won its final half-hour by 6 shares in 18-49. Excluding the Academy Awards, ABC hasn't done better in the 7-9 p.m. slot on a Sunday since November 2007.
At NBC, "Celebrity Apprentice" (3.4/9 in 18-49, 9.3 million viewers overall) grew by nearly 50% week to week to place a potent second to "Lost" from 9 to 11. It came in about 10% above last season's finale and delivered the show's best demo score since last season's premiere in March 2009, and its largest overall audience for an episode since the previous season's finale in March 2008. The reality show jumped sharply from its "Minute to Win It" lead-in (1.7/5 in 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall), which itself built from newsmag "Dateline" in the 7 o'clock hour (1.1/4 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall).
Fox seemed affected by the "Lost" programming, as the finales of "Family Guy" (3.2/8 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall in a special 9:30 p.m. firstrun timeslot and 3.0/8 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall in its regular 9 p.m. time period), "The Simpsons" (2.5/8 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) and "The Cleveland Show" (2.3/7 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall) were all down by double-digit percentages vs. the previous week.
CBS started slowly with "60 Minutes" (1.0/4 in 18-49, 9.4 million viewers overall) and then did OK with its two-hour special "Academy of Country Music Presents Brooks & Dunn: The Last Rodeo" (1.8/5 in 18-49, 10.1 million viewers overall), which the net clearly positioned as an alternative on the busy night.
Also a factor on the night was TNT's coverage of Game 3 of the NBA's Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns -- although in the host cities, the game was over prior to the start of the night's top entertainment series. Ratings for the game will be released by Nielsen on Tuesday.
Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.8/15; NBC, 2.4/7; Fox, 2.2/6; CBS, 1.5/4.
In total viewers: ABC, 11.4 million; CBS, 9.1 million; NBC, 7.4 million; Fox, 4.7 million; Univision, 3.1 million.

Comcast to Make Your IPad a Giant Remote
By Marco Tabini
Thanks to its small size and weight, the iPad's place is not on our desks, but at our side--a constant companion that augments and enriches our daily lives. This seems to be inspiring all sorts of innovative apps that take advantage of everything our beloved tablet has to offer in new and exciting ways.
One such example comes from the labs of U.S. cable giant Comcast, which demoed a prototype of its new Xfinity Remote, an app that can be used to access and control the company's on-demand and TV-recording services.
Judging from the press release, "remote" may be a bit of a misnomer for this app, considering the slew of features it comes with. In addition to controlling your TV viewing experience, Xfinity allows you to share your favourite shows with your friends and invite them to watch them in real time, thus adding a whole new social dimension to your living room entertainment experience.
There's no word on when--or if--the Xfinity Remote will be available to consumers. In the meantime, Comcast Labs has published a video of a demo that was shown at this week's NCTA show.

Authors Copyright Termination Right: Regaining Rights In Your Content?
The Copyright Act actually gives content creators the powerful right to regain ownership despite what a contract may say about transferring rights. As with everything, the devil is in the details, but if you are an artist, actor, producer, production house or other creative person or company, especially from the late 70's or early 80's because the first test of this right is soon, you need to know your rights.

TV creators ace face time
Fans turn showrunners into Hollywood stars
Co-creators Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof attend the Lost "Meet the Creator" event at the Apple Store Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA.
Television makes its own stars -- that's a showbiz truism from the days of Milton Berle and Sid Caesar. But these days television is delivering a new breed of star -- the celebrity showrunner -- which is changing the way networks tubthump their shows and deepening the way fans connect with shows.
In some cases, such showrunners are becoming as well-known to fans as the shows' thesps. Think J. J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane, Matthew Weiner, Joss Whedon, Alan Ball, Ronald D. Moore, Shawn Ryan and Shonda Rhimes. Up-and-comers in this realm include "Glee's" Ryan Murphy; Kurt Sutter, leader of "Sons of Anarchy"; Jason Katims, steward of "Parenthood" and "Friday Night Lights"; Bryan Fuller, of the now-departed "Pushing Daisies"; and "Modern Family" co-creator Steve Levitan.

Conan O'Brien set to exit 'Tonight Show'
$30-$40 million deal expected to be sealed this weekend
Just seven months after inheriting the "Tonight Show," Conan O’Brien -- faced with a timeslot demotion -- is close to finalizing his exit from NBC.
O’Brien’s short tenure as host of the storied late-night franchise is expected to conclude next Friday. That means Jay Leno will regain the reins of "The Tonight Show," moving back to the 11:35 p.m. timeslot effective March 1 -- the night after the Winter Olympics concludes.
O’Brien’s exit from NBC was being hammered out Friday, after days of negotiations and plenty of press speculation.

Sony to bow 3-D TVs, games in 2010
TOKYO -- Sony has unveiled plans for 3-D-capable consumer products that will hit the shelves in 2010, boosting the burgeoning market for 3-D pics while putting competitive pressure on its rivals.
On Thursday the electronics giant said it would bow Bravia LCD televisions, PlayStation 3 game consoles, Vaio computers and Blu-ray disc players with 3-D capability. It also plans to expand its range of 3-D software.
Sony's 3-D push comes as the demand for 3-D pics is poised to accelerate in the U.S. and worldwide, with 7,000 3-D theater screens expected to be up and running worldwide by the end of the year.
Sony CEO and chairman Howard Stringer outlined Sony's 3-D plans at a press conference in Berlin on the eve of the IFA 2009 consumer electronics show, a six-day confab that begins today.

''The Simpsons'' Undergo Makeover For African Continent Debut
At the behest of advertisers, the family have been turned into Angolans ahead of the shows first airing in the African continent.
Don't have an elephant, man: The Simpson family have been turned into Angolans for the launch of the show in the African continent
Angolan advertising agency Executive Center have taken an original animated promotional shot of Bart, Homer, Maggie Lisa and Marge sitting together on a couch and altered it to show them as Africans.
Their yellow skin has been replaced with a much darker brown skin while Marge's blue hair has been switched for a jet black afro hairdo. Lisa's hair is now braided and the entire family are shown wearing Angolan-inspired clothing and flip flops.
The family cat has completely disappeared from the new shot. Also missing are a lamp, table and telephone which have been replaced by huge stereo speakers.
And the picture on the wall of a yacht on the ocean is now a picture of Serengeti elephant scene.
Underneath the family are the words: 'The Simpsons now in Angola.'
However, it is believed the family will keep their traditional yellow look when the series airs on digital service DStv next month.
Now a massive franchise, The Simpsons is broadcast in more than 90 countries and has been translated into more than 45 languages since it started in 1989. 441 episodes have currently been made.
