Who needs Labels? Black Hole Recordings' Bas Kruijssen answers

For the new media manager of the Tiesto co-founded Dutch dance music label, artists pondering whether they should sign to a label might want to ask themselves "do I have enough time to focus on my creative process" and at the same time do "all the stuff that people don't see", namely distribution, promotion and more? In other words, what labels do...

"If you draw a picture of how many people that artist would need (without a label), there are about four or five... So I think there's so much added value in a label." Kruijssen notably gave the example of social media support, stating that "a label's background in social media can help artists enlarge their own network," and help out specifically by organising Google+ Hangouts or Soundrop chats with fans. "That's definitely something a label should do," said Kruijssen.

Mike Caren Discusses his Role as President of A&R for Warner Music Group

Does he operate as an A&R as well, or is he more tied to managing his A&R executives? Mike answers these questions in his own words and defines his role as President along with how he works in conjunction with his A&R executives. Ren also asks Mike how he balances his interests as a musician/songwriter/producer with his responsibilities running A&R for all his labels.

Shopping for a Talent Deals with Major Label/Studio

"Shopping" entertainment projects (i.e., music, film, television, etc.) is the informal term of submitting projects to record/publishing companies or tv/film studios on behalf of creative talent. This was an active way of doing things in the 90's and early 00's but I believe that this activity is no longer very relevant given the shrinking industry, lack of interest in developing talent, and company's strict focus on the bottom line...my opinion of course.

Authors Copyright Termination Right: Regaining Rights In Your Content?

The Copyright Act actually gives content creators the powerful right to regain ownership despite what a contract may say about transferring rights. As with everything, the devil is in the details, but if you are an artist, actor, producer, production house or other creative person or company, especially from the late 70's or early 80's because the first test of this right is soon, you need to know your rights.
